WHAT IT IS - Skill Based Assessment and Training
System The Independent Living Skills (ILS) System is a software
assisted, systematic, competency-based approach to life skills training. The
system combines timesaving technology with a comprehensive assessment and
reporting package to produce skill plans and transition plans tailored to the
individuals needs. ILS is in widespread use by hundreds of programs nationwide
and Canada. 13 states are currently using the ILS system as their primary tool
to assess and teach independent living skills.

Training Not many succeed alone. Most people who have managed to
make it in life had someone to show them the way. The ILS V8 System serves a
dual purpose. Very simply, it assesses the client and enables them to focus on

HOW IT WORKS - Focuses on Skills Client Needs
The core of the ILS V8 is the Assessment for Life Skills, a 16
category assessment designed for individuals 14 years and older. The ILS begins
with the administration of the life skills assessment. The assessment can be
given in a paper format or taken directly on the computer by the individual. The
software then generates a detailed skill plan focusing on needs, goals, and
specific strategies for life skills training in each assessed category.

Sample Skill Plan Question: 21 Food
Management
Needs: The youth needs to know how to make a
grocery shopping list for one, and how to make purchases from a
store.
Goal: The youth will be able to successfully plan
a shopping list, purchase the items on the list, and pay the cashier.
Strategy: a) The care provider will assist
the youth in making a shopping list for one. This should be combined with menu
planning and budgeting. This should be practiced until youth is able to do well.
b) The care provider will assist the youth in shopping with
the list. This should be done with comparison shopping skills and unit
pricing skills. This should be repeated until youth is able to do
well. c) Shopping tactics: 1) check the
refrigerator before shopping to avoid buying things you already have.
2) Check the newspaper for food bargains and coupons at
area stores. 3) Don't shop when hungry. Can lead to impulse
buying. Stick to shopping list. 4) Store brands are usually
less expensive than name brands. Compare labels for nutritional value to help
decide
TRANSITION PLAN The New ILS V8 Transition Plan
has been re-written and saves you valuable time. The Transition Plan details the
steps, requirements, resources and documents that are necessary for
transitioning clients from current placement to discharge. With this feature you
consistently and systematically generate plans that are uniform in appearance
and format, quickly and easily. The program guides you through a series of
simple questions and generates a thorough transition plan based on responses.
